Food Friday - The Power of Cottage Cheese!

If you're not a cottage cheese lover don't stop reading this now. I've included something for you, no worries.

Who would have guessed it? Did you know that cottage cheese is one of the best sources of protein on the market? It's become one of my favorite snacks. Occasionally I get a little burnt out and take a break from eating it as a snack but that doesn't seem to stop me from adding it into things without me knowing it's there. Most of the time though, you can always find a big container sitting on the top shelf of my refrigerator waiting to be eaten. The other wonderful miracle about cottage cheese is that not only is it low in fat, lower in calories, and will provide you with 12 - 24 grams of protein per serving, but it's one of the SLOWEST releasing proteins you can consume. Meaning, it helps make you feel fuller longer, sustain your energy for longer periods, and is a great snack to have in the evening. I talked about this just recently when I was mentioning nutrition. (click here) You want to head off to bed with something in your stomach so that your engine will keep running through the night and when you consume something like cottage cheese it will keep releasing protein as the night goes on, never bringing your metabolism to a complete halt. This is a good thing. A very good thing! SO, why not do your body some good and order in the cottage cheese!

Here are some of the ways I seem to enjoy it:
- Plain (with a little pepper)
- Mixed with Salsa
- On a salad

If you're not a big fan of cottage cheese, try then making these pancakes! They are full of protein and fiber, not to mention super yummy! My kids had no idea they were eating cottage cheese in their pancakes!

Oatmeal Cottage Cheese Pancakes
  • ½ cup oatmeal
  • ½ cup cottage cheese
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 egg whites
Mix together the ingredients in a blender and pour onto a hot griddle coated with cooking spray. Top with your favorite pancake toppings and enjoy! Note: They will come out slightly flatter than your average pancake but it doesn't seem to bother my family.

How are you going to incorporate cottage cheese in your diet this week? I know I am!

  1. How does cottage cheese compare to yogurt? I'm not a fan of cottage cheese, but I love yogurt, but I might have too give it a try.

    1. I know the Greek yogurts are the best as far as protein and low in sugar but cottage cheese will be better in both areas hand down.

  3. I talked with a lady who also lost a lot of weight by going to a nutritionist. I told her about the eat before you go to bed so your metabolism doesn't slow down. She says that's for people are are REALLY working out only. If you're not- don't do it. Do you agree or no?

  4. I like cottage cheese but burned out on it a while ago. May be time to try it again. My hubby like to put maple syrup on his cottage cheese, that grosses me out! He might like the panckakes...

  5. Yay! This is exciting to read - I love cc! What a great idea to eat it as a snack later in the day. I love Knudsen's but can't find it outside of CA anymore - I like dry cottage cheese. I'm going to try your pancakes! Thanks Paige!

    1. I don't like runny cottage cheese either! They do carry a brand at Paul's that's not too bad. What kind do you get?

  6. My grandma used to always make me cottage cheese when I visited her, it always makes me think of her. Unfortunately she taught me to absolutely cover it in salt, so I have a hard time eating it without salt. :) I like the idea of hiding it in pancakes, maybe that's how I'll get cottage cheese back in my diet rotation!

  8. Paige I just found your blog via Mama Laughlin and YOU ARE AMAZING! You go girl! I don't even know you and I'm so proud of you. Anyway, I just made this last night and you have to try it because it's delicious. I mixed cottage cheese with some sugar-free Cherry Jello powder (or you can do any flavor) enough to make it a rich dark pink color. Then I added some fully-thawed sugar free cool whip (Sometimes I add whipped heavy cream if I want to reduce the carb count - I'm doing Atkins). You should try it!! It keeps well in the fridge and is a great already-made protein snack that also curbs my sweet tooth! ;)

  9. Kimberlee my sister who is a trainer totally makes that. I hate cottage cheese and I will eat that!
Paige- Hi I just found your blog as well on mama Laughlin . I am in the process of losing as well. You are good motivation in that you are just a normal mom and wife who did it the all natural way, no crazy diets. Anyway as I mentioned I hate cottage cheese so the way I sneak it In is when we have spaggati(whole wheat pasta, ground turkey) I blend up a small container so it is like a creamy paste and mix it into my sauce for a creamy protein boost!!
